  Buckey Winkley  Guide  Photographer  Artist

Buckey Winkley came to Alaska during May of 1961, and has been a full-time professional Alaskan Registered Guide since 1964.  Registered as licensed guide #34 Buckey has hunted Grizzly Bear, Moose, Caribou, Ptarmigan, Deer, Dall Sheep, and much more.  Buckey has enjoyed experience as his teacher.  From ash pits of Cold Bay on the Alaskan Peninsula, to Kodiak Island and south to the jungles of Yakutat, Buckey has been among large Brown Bears, Grizzlies, Blacks, and Glacier Bears.  He has been a bear guide living adventure every step of the way.

Buckey came to Alaska out of high school from Danvers, Massachusetts, twenty miles north of Boston.  In those days you either went to college or were drafted so Buckey enlisted for three years of service in the Army and wound up stationed in Alaska.  What better way to serve your military obligation and see Alaska, than at the expense of Uncle Sam.

Buckey's many years in the wilderness have given him time to study wildlife within their natural habitats, experiences few other guides can boast.  Hunting puts Buckey where the game is.  Dall Sheep, Moose, Caribou, Bear, and Sitka Blacktail Deer, are all very familiar to a man who has pursued them most of his life.

He vividly remembers the numerous experiences and is a master at sharing the many stories of his hunting adventures.  He has witnessed wolves chasing caribou across frozen tundra.  His memory reveals the story of two giant bull moose, both with antlers well over a sixty inch spreads, struggling to separate from locked combat.  He vividly recalls stalking rams in a blinding snow storm and watching as they disappeared just two hundred feet in front of him.  He boldly relates the time he stopped an eight foot brown bear in full charge at fifteen feet with a .44 magnum revolver.  As the great bear charged ever closer Buckey had only seconds to draw a .44 magnum from his holster, aim and fire, saving his life by a scant fifteen feet.

Buckey knows bears first hand, through experiences like the time he awoke to find a black bear in his tent with its chest against his cot, or the many hunts he has lead that brought home record sized grizzlies.

Years of wilderness adventures with wildlife have enabled Buckey to give his life the excitement many can only dream of.  But, more than anything else, Buckey loves to hunt and is a master at it.

So, if you are searching for the adventure of a lifetime, the opportunity to bring home a trophy, and an experience that you will cherish for the rest of your life, your only choice for a world class hunting guide must be Buckey Winkley.
